Key Departures at PlatinumGames and Housemarque's New Project

PlatinumGames, the studio behind the Bayonetta franchise, has experienced a significant exodus of key developers recently, sparking concerns about its future direction. This follows the September 2023 departure of Hideki Kamiya, the renowned creator of Bayonetta, who cited creative differences with the studio's trajectory. Kamiya's subsequent role leading development on Capcom's Okami sequel further fueled speculation.

Adding to the uncertainty, Abebe Tinari, director of the critically-received Bayonetta Origins: Cereza and the Lost Demon, has left PlatinumGames. Tinari's move to Helsinki, Finland, was confirmed via his LinkedIn profile, revealing a new position as Lead Game Designer at Housemarque, the PlayStation-owned studio behind Returnal.

Tinari's expertise is likely to be instrumental in Housemarque's currently unannounced new IP, a project the studio has been developing since the 2021 release of Returnal. While a release date remains undisclosed, an announcement is unlikely before 2026.

The Impact on PlatinumGames' Future

The impact of these high-profile departures on PlatinumGames' upcoming projects remains to be seen. While the studio is celebrating Bayonetta's 15th anniversary with a year-long event, potentially hinting at a new installment in the series, the status of Project GG, a new IP helmed by the now-departed Kamiya, is uncertain. The project's development timeline is likely to be affected by this change. The overall situation highlights a period of significant transition and uncertainty for PlatinumGames.
