Assassin's Creed Shadows: A Revamped Parkour System and Dual Protagonists

Assassin's Creed Shadows, Ubisoft's highly anticipated feudal Japan-set installment, is set to launch February 14th. This latest entry introduces significant changes, particularly to the parkour system and its dual protagonists.

A Refined Approach to Parkour:

The game's parkour mechanics have undergone a substantial overhaul. Instead of the free-climbing system of previous titles, Shadows introduces designated "parkour highways." While this might initially seem restrictive, Ubisoft assures players that most climbable surfaces remain accessible, albeit requiring a more strategic approach. The design aims to create more fluid and engaging pathways. This change also allows for more controlled level design, particularly considering the differing abilities of the two protagonists.

Seamless ledge dismounts are another key improvement. Players can now smoothly dismount from ledges with stylish flips, enhancing the fluidity of parkour sequences. A new prone position also allows for diving during sprints, adding another layer of movement options. The grappling hook remains a valuable tool for navigating the environment.

Dual Protagonists, Divergent Playstyles:

Shadows features two playable characters: Naoe, a stealthy shinobi adept at climbing and shadow maneuvering; and Yasuke, a powerful samurai excelling in open combat but unable to climb. This dual-protagonist design caters to both fans of classic Assassin's Creed stealth gameplay and those who prefer the more action-oriented RPG combat of titles like Odyssey and Valhalla. The differing abilities of Naoe and Yasuke directly influence level design and parkour highway placement.

February Launch and Competitive Landscape:

Launching on Xbox Series X/S, PlayStation 5, and PC, Assassin's Creed Shadows faces stiff competition in a busy February release window, including titles like Monster Hunter Wilds, Like a Dragon: Pirate Yakuza in Hawaii, and Avowed. Ubisoft will undoubtedly unveil further details as the launch date approaches.
