Adding naval warfare in time for Crusader Kings 3's Silk and Silver expansion would have blown Paradox's \"schedule out of [the] water\"

Naval combat won't be arriving in Crusader Kings 3 alongside the upcoming Merchant Republics DLC from Paradox Interactive later this year. The developers aim to give sea battles proper attention, avoiding a rushed integration into an expansion already packed with high-risk features and ambitious systems that could disrupt their development schedule.

This clarification came at the conclusion of a detailed overview of the Silk & Silver expansion, which is the second major add-on in CK3's fifth DLC chapter announced earlier this week.

"Since players frequently ask about it, I'll address naval warfare now," wrote game designer Snow Crystal regarding the Silk & Silver update. "This DLC will not feature naval battles or dedicated naval combat mechanics. While we know republics are closely tied to maritime themes, balancing new systems and adding fresh gameplay elements required us to focus our resources elsewhere rather than attempting a rushed implementation of another large-scale feature."

"Even a basic version of naval warfare would significantly delay the release schedule, especially given other risky changes in this expansion. We want to ensure everything is polished. Expect water-based trade routes, but no direct ship-to-ship combat for now."

This isn't a permanent exclusion; it simply means naval battles won't coincide with the massive economic overhaul and rebalancing that allows players to lead wealthy trading dynasties. Given CK3's extensive DLC history, dedicated naval warfare would likely make sense as its own premium expansion if priced correctly. Future updates could even introduce pirate roleplaying elements for coastal rulers or adventurers seeking fortune off their thrones.

In the meantime, fans of medieval maritime combat can turn to Mount & Blade II: Bannerlord’s War Sails expansion, released last year and focused entirely on large-scale naval engagements.
