Application Description

The Hang is a musical instrument in the idiophone class, created in Switzerland.

The instrument consists of two deep drawn, nitrided steel half-shells bonded together at the rim, forming a distinctive UFO-like hollow structure. The top surface (called "Ding") features a central note hammered into it, surrounded by seven or eight additional tone fields. The bottom ("Gu") has a plain surface with a central resonant hole that produces a tuned note when the rim is struck. This unique instrument is also commonly known as a handpan.

While based on similar acoustic principles to the steelpan, the Hang has been engineered to function as a Helmholtz resonator. Its development represents the culmination of extensive research into steelpan technology and other percussion instruments.
