Euchre uses a 24-card standard deck. Teams are made up of two players each.

When a player names a suit as trump, they commit their team to winning most of the tricks. Earn one point for three or four tricks, and two points for all five tricks. Failure to take three tricks is called being “euchred,” and awards the opposing team two points.

A confident caller with a strong hand can “go alone.” In this case, the partner sits out, and the caller aims to win all five tricks solo—scoring four points for their team. If the lone caller takes only three or four tricks, they score one point. If euchred when playing alone, the opposing team still receives two points.

A core rule in Euchre: you are never forced to play a trump card unless it’s the suit led. However, you must follow suit whenever possible.
