Dominoes, also known as dominos, is a captivating board game enjoyed with rectangular tiles known as "dominoes." These tiles are part of a domino set, often referred to as a deck, pack, or set, which traditionally consists of 28 pieces, colloquially called bones, cards, tiles, tickets, stones, or spinners. Each domino features a line dividing its face into two square ends, marked with spots or left blank. The versatility of domino sets allows for a variety of games, much like playing cards or dice. Extended sets, such as double 9 and double 12, cater to games like Mexican train and Chicken Foot. Each country boasts its unique set of domino games: England enjoys Muggins (All fives), Scandinavian countries play Bergen, Mexico loves Mexican train, and Spain favors Matador.

The origins of dominoes trace back to the Song Dynasty in China, with the game reaching Italy in the 18th century. The evolution from Chinese to modern dominoes remains a fascinating mystery.

General Rules of Dominoes:

Blocking Game:

The simplest dominoes variant is a two-player game using a double-six set. The 28 tiles are shuffled face down to create the stock or boneyard. Each player draws seven tiles, with the remaining tiles unused. Players place their tiles on-edge to keep their values hidden from opponents. The game starts with one player laying down the first tile, which varies by game: in Muggins, it's the highest double (6-6); in Bergen, it's 0-0; and in Mexican train, it's the next lower double each round. Players take turns extending the line of play by matching tile ends. The game concludes when a player plays their last tile or when no further moves are possible, with points awarded based on remaining tiles.

Scoring Game:

Points are scored for specific configurations, moves, or emptying one's hand. In Muggins (All fives), players aim to make the open ends total a multiple of five. In Bergen, points are scored when open ends match. If a player fails to call "domino" before placing a tile and another player calls it afterward, the first player must draw an extra tile. In Mexican train, the double zero domino scores 50 points.

Draw Game:

In the draw game, players can draw tiles from the stock before playing. The game's score is calculated from the pips in the losing player's hand plus those in the stock, with typically two tiles left in the stock at the end. This variant is commonly known simply as "dominos."
