Alan Cumming has opened up about the emotional contrast between his original, traumatic experience filming X2: X-Men United (2003) and his much more positive return to the role of Nightcrawler in the upcoming Avengers: Doomsday. In a heartfelt reflection shared with People, Cumming described his time on the first film as "miserable" and "awful for various reasons I've often discussed"—a sentiment he previously expanded upon in his 2021 memoir, Baggage: Tales from a Fully Packed Life.
In that memoir, Cumming detailed the deeply unsettling environment on set under director Bryan Singer, who he accused of substance abuse, erratic behavior, and creating a toxic atmosphere that affected many cast and crew members. The experience left lasting emotional scars, and Cumming has since spoken candidly about the toll it took.
Fast forward to 2024, and Cumming is returning to the role of the blue, acrobatic mutant for Avengers: Doomsday—a film that brings together a legendary roster of X-Men alumni, including Patrick Stewart (Professor X), Kelsey Grammer (Beast), James Marsden (Cyclops), Rebecca Romijn (Mystique), and Ian McKellen (Magneto). Notably, this will be Cumming’s first time portraying Nightcrawler in a major film since X2, and he says the experience has been profoundly healing.
“It was amazing,” he told People. “In a really emotional way, it felt healing and rewarding to revisit something that had been such a terrible experience the first time. It’s a great film—I truly love it.”
Cumming also expressed surprise and gratitude at being able to reprise the role at age 60, especially given the physical demands. “Going back was actually wonderful,” he said. “At 60, I never imagined I'd be performing stunts and playing a superhero again. The cast and crew were all so kind.”
He added that his filming schedule was compressed due to his commitment to The Traitors, the reality TV series in which he starred, requiring him to wrap his scenes early in production.
While Avengers: Doomsday continues to roll, more stars are expected to join, including Ryan Reynolds—reprising his role as Deadpool—and Xochitl Gomez, who previously starred in Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. The film is shaping up to be a landmark moment in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, blending legacy characters with a new generation of heroes.
For Cumming, returning as Nightcrawler isn’t just a career milestone—it’s a full-circle emotional journey, turning a painful past into a triumphant and joyful second chapter.
