The game's primary goal is to accumulate the highest or lowest score—depending on the agreed-upon rules—while the player in second place faces the loss. It's played using a 40-card Spanish deck.

In Tute Cabrero, the card hierarchy is pivotal, with the Ace leading at 11 points, followed by the 3 at 10 points, King at 4 points, Knight at 3 points, and Jack at 2 points. The remaining cards—7, 6, 5, 4, and 2—carry no value. The game's strategy hinges on the first card played in each trick, setting the suit that all players must follow. If unable to follow suit, a player may play any card. The trump suit trumps all, winning the trick unless no trump is played, in which case the highest card of the leading suit takes the win.
