Guitar Hero Mobile Stumbles with AI Launch

Author : Ryan Update:May 17,2025

When it comes to fast-and-furious rhythm games, the genre may not have taken off in the West, but there was one notable exception: Guitar Hero. Now, this legendary franchise is set to make a comeback, and it's exciting to see it heading to mobile devices. However, the announcement from Activision didn't quite hit the right note.

The reveal was not accompanied by a trailer or a detailed press release, but rather by an AI-generated promotional image shared on Instagram. This move has overshadowed the excitement for the revival, especially since it follows another controversial use of AI in the announcement of Call of Duty: Black Ops 6. The use of AI art has drawn significant criticism and has dampened the anticipation for Guitar Hero Mobile.

Details on what Guitar Hero Mobile will look and sound like are scarce. The series did make an appearance on mobile nearly two decades ago, as shown below, but fans are hoping for something truly impressive this time around.

Broken strings—The AI-generated art used for the announcement has been widely criticized for its poor quality, possibly not even utilizing the latest image generation technology. This has led to concerns that Guitar Hero Mobile might struggle to gain traction, especially with strong competitors like Space Ape's BeatStar already thriving in the market.

While the idea of Guitar Hero returning and thriving on mobile is thrilling, Activision's choice of announcement method has undeniably struck a sour chord. Despite the potential for success, the company's latest misstep has left a lot to be desired.
