Tomb Raider Series Update At The Game Awards 2025
The Future of Tomb Raider
The next phase for the Tomb Raider franchise is set to be revealed at the upcoming Game Awards 2025. As confirmed by TGA organizer Geoff Keighley on Twitter (X) on December 9, the iconic action-adventure series will share news about its newest ventures during Thursday night’s broadcast.
The original Tomb Raider game launched in 1996, kicking off a legendary legacy. Since then, the franchise has grown to include over 20 titles, with Shadow of the Tomb Raider serving as the most recent mainline installment released in 2018.
Although Keighley’s post did not explicitly confirm a video game release, there is a strong possibility that the announcement concerns the upcoming Prime Video live-action Tomb Raider series. According to Story Kitchen, the production studio behind the project, the initiative aims to "reinvent the franchise on a massive scale" by weaving together a new television series and video games into one cohesive narrative universe.
Possible New Game
The phrase "future of Tomb Raider" may also encompass multiple initiatives, making the release of a new game entirely plausible. Crystal Dynamics, the long-time developer behind the series, appears poised to lead this effort if it happens, having previously hinted at such plans in 2022.
In April 2022, the studio confirmed that work was underway on a brand-new Tomb Raider title. While specifics remain scarce, Crystal Dynamics noted its commitment to utilizing Unreal Engine 5 for future projects, signaling a fresh era of development under their stewardship.
However, recent staff reductions at the studio have introduced some uncertainty regarding this anticipated title. Following a reorganization in November 2025, Crystal Dynamics provided an update on LinkedIn regarding its current status.
"To our players - as the realities of the industry continue to evolve, we've made these painful choices as a way to optimize the continued development of our flagship Tomb Raider game, as well as shaping the rest of the studio to make new games for the future," Crystal Dynamics stated.
With TGA 2025 approaching rapidly, this announcement will likely clarify the status of Crystal Dynamics’ project. For more information on The Game Awards 2025, please refer to our article below.
