Stephen King's Cujo Will Be Reimagined In New Netflix Adaptation

Author : Michael Update:Apr 06,2025

In the latest wave of "here comes a new remake" news—or, if you're a bit more optimistic, "here comes another Stephen King movie" news—a brand new adaptation of Cujo is about to bare its teeth. Netflix is set to produce a new film version of King's chilling story, according to Deadline, with Vertigo Entertainment founder and producer Roy Lee attached to the project. However, the film is still in its early stages, with no writers, directors, or cast members announced yet.

Stephen King's novel Cujo was originally published in 1981 and swiftly adapted into a 1983 cult classic horror movie by Don Carlos Dunaway and Barbara Turner, directed by Lewis Teague. The gripping tale follows a determined mother, portrayed by Dee Wallace, who will stop at nothing to protect her young son from a rabid dog. The duo finds themselves trapped in a car with a dead engine, fighting for survival as Cujo, once a sweet pet turned deadly after being bitten by a rabid bat, relentlessly stalks them from outside the vehicle while the threat of heatstroke looms.

Recently, there has been a resurgence of King adaptations. Oz Perkins’ take on King’s short story The Monkey was released in February, and fans can look forward to the Glen Powell-led adaptation of The Running Man and JT Mollner’s interpretation of The Long Walk (also produced by Lee and Vertigo) later this year. Additionally, the IT prequel series Welcome to Derry is set to premiere on HBO. The iconic horror film Carrie is also being reimagined as an eight-episode series on Prime Video, helmed by horror maestro Mike Flanagan.

Stephen King fans have been enjoying a feast of adaptations lately, and with the upcoming Cujo remake, there's even more gourmet horror on the way.
