Sony Turned Down The Order: 1886 Sequel Due to Critical Reception, Dev Says

Ready at Dawn, the developer behind the PlayStation 4 title The Order: 1886, revealed that Sony rejected a proposed sequel. Andrea Pessino, co-founder of Ready at Dawn, shared this information with MinnMax, explaining that despite the original game's mixed critical reception, they pitched an "incredible" sequel to Sony. Pessino stated they were willing to accept unfavorable terms to create the sequel, prioritizing delivering a satisfying experience to fans. He cited the original game's development as fraught with challenges, including difficult negotiations with Sony and the need to cut content to meet deadlines, leading to a rushed release. The initial high graphical fidelity set expectations that proved difficult to maintain consistently throughout development, impacting the relationship between Ready at Dawn and Sony. Despite these difficulties, and the cliffhanger ending left in the first game, Pessino maintains that the groundwork for a compelling sequel was in place. The rejection, coupled with Ready at Dawn's closure by Meta in 2024, effectively ends hopes for a continuation of the Order franchise. IGN's original review of The Order: 1886, scoring it a 6/10, highlighted its cinematic presentation but criticized its limited gameplay freedom.
