Pokémon Legends: Z-A, the next installment in Game Freak's Legends series, is generating significant buzz. Set in the Lumiose City of the X and Y games, this title has received an E10+ ESRB rating for "Fantasy Violence," a departure from the usual "E for Everyone" rating of the mainline Pokémon games. This unexpected rating has sparked considerable, and often humorous, speculation among fans.
The Nintendo Switch store page reveals the E10+ rating, prompting questions about the game's content. While unusual for Pokémon, this rating is consistent with Pokkén Tournament DX, another Pokémon game with an E10+ rating for "Fantasy Violence."

Theories abound regarding the reason for the higher rating. Some humorous suggestions include increased violence in dialogue or even the introduction of gunplay mechanics. Others speculate about a more prominent role for darker elements of Lumiose City or the inclusion of a Game Center-style minigame. The return of hordes, perhaps involving a Scrafty ambush, is another playful suggestion. Reddit user RynnHamHam playfully commented, "Ohhhh boy, Game Freak is taking off the little kiddie gloves...This ain’t your kindergartener’s Pokémon game." The potential return of AZ, a character with a significant role in the darker aspects of Pokémon X and Y, also fuels speculation.
A more plausible explanation might be the "Fantasy Violence" element, particularly considering the real-time combat shown in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. The more direct contact between Pokémon in these sequences could justify the higher rating.
Currently, the ESRB website lacks information on Pokémon Legends: Z-A, leaving room for further speculation. However, the E10+ rating hints at a potentially more mature experience compared to previous mainline entries.
Pokémon Legends: Z-A is scheduled for release in late 2025 on Nintendo Switch.
