Pokémon Go Director on Scopely: No Need for Fan Concern

Author : Sarah Update:Apr 17,2025

After the recent acquisition of Pokémon Go developer Niantic by Scopely, the company behind Monopoly Go, fans have expressed significant concerns ranging from increased advertisements to data privacy issues. However, a reassuring interview with Pokémon Go's product director, Michael Steranka, published on Polygon, aims to alleviate these worries.

In the interview, Steranka praised Scopely, highlighting a shared vision between the two companies. He confidently stated that intrusive ads are unlikely to be introduced into Pokémon Go under Scopely's ownership. This should come as a relief to players who have been apprehensive about potential changes to the game's user experience.

For those concerned about data privacy, Steranka was clear and direct: Niantic will not sell or share player data with third parties. This firm stance on privacy should help ease the minds of players who value their personal information.

Steranka also emphasized that the transition to Scopely would have minimal impact on Niantic's operations. He reassured fans that the core team and their approach to the game would remain largely unchanged.

ytIf it ain't broke...While some might worry about corporate influence, I believe Scopely will adopt a hands-off approach with Pokémon Go, given its ongoing success. The focus for Niantic moving forward seems to be on exploring new AR applications through a dedicated spin-off team.

Importantly, Steranka noted the close collaboration with The Pokémon Company in decision-making processes for Pokémon Go. This partnership ensures that any significant changes or additions to the game would align with the values and expectations of both Niantic and The Pokémon Company.
