Marvel Rivals Issues Apology for Unfair Bans; Players Advocate for Expanded Character Ban System
NetEase, the developer of Marvel Rivals, recently issued a public apology for mistakenly banning a significant number of innocent players. The incident, which occurred on January 3rd, saw many non-Windows users playing on compatibility layers (Mac, Linux, and Steam Deck) incorrectly flagged as cheaters. These bans have since been lifted.
The mass banning initiative, aimed at eliminating cheaters, inadvertently targeted players utilizing compatibility software like Proton (on SteamOS), which is known to trigger some anti-cheat systems. NetEase has acknowledged the error and urged players to report genuine cheating while offering an appeal process for wrongful bans.
Separately, a community discussion has emerged regarding the game's character ban system. Currently, this feature—allowing players to remove specific characters from selection—is only available in Diamond rank and above. Many players, particularly those in lower ranks, are advocating for its expansion to all ranks. They argue that this would provide a more balanced and engaging experience, especially for newer players, facilitating diverse team compositions and strategic depth beyond simple DPS-focused teams.
Reddit users have expressed frustration over the current limitation, highlighting the unfair advantage higher-ranked players enjoy with access to the ban system. While NetEase hasn't yet responded to these concerns, the community's call for a more inclusive character ban mechanic remains prominent.
