Why That Brief Look at Mario Kart 9 Suggests Nintendo Switch 2 Is 'Significantly More Powerful' Than the Original — According to a Developer

Author : Daniel Update:Mar 05,2025

An indie game developer with extensive experience creating Switch titles offers compelling evidence suggesting the Switch 2 boasts significantly enhanced processing power. This conclusion is drawn primarily from analyzing the recently released Mario Kart 9 trailer.

The Nintendo Switch 2's hardware unveiling left many impressed, yet details on its processing capabilities remain scarce. While upgrades like new Joy-Cons and a redesigned form factor are confirmed, the console's raw power remains unquantified.

Jerrel Dulay of Sungrand Studios, a developer with a proven track record on Wii U and 3DS titles, provides insightful commentary in a new YouTube video. His analysis centers on the Mario Kart 9 footage showcased in the Switch 2 reveal.

Dulay highlights the use of "physically-based shaders" in the trailer, impacting textures and responding to lighting and reflections. This, coupled with Digital Foundry's late 2023 report suggesting an Nvidia T239 chip with approximately 1536 CUDA cores (a substantial increase over the original Switch's 256), points towards a significant performance leap.

The original Switch's limitations in handling complex shaders and high-resolution textures are well-documented. Dulay emphasizes that the Mario Kart 9 footage showcases numerous high-resolution textures and advanced effects like realistic ground reflections and volumetric lighting – all computationally expensive processes. The rumored 12GB of LPDDR5 RAM (a significant upgrade from the original Switch's 4GB) further supports this assertion, enabling faster texture loading and improved overall performance.

The inclusion of volumetric lighting and far-distance shadows, both graphically demanding features, strongly suggests a substantial increase in processing power. These effects were previously challenging to implement on the original Switch due to hardware constraints. The higher RAM speed, potentially reaching 7500MHz, adds to the performance boost.

Furthermore, the high polygon count of characters, detailed textures, and real-time cloth physics on the flagpoles all contribute to Dulay's conclusion that the Switch 2 represents a major graphical advancement.

While awaiting further official details, Dulay's analysis provides a compelling perspective on the Switch 2's anticipated graphical capabilities. Nintendo's April Direct promises more information.
