Lenovo Legion Go (Z1 Extreme) Launches with SteamOS

Author : Stella Update:Dec 20,2025

Lenovo has unveiled its flagship Legion Go S model, featuring a pre-installed SteamOS and the high-performance AMD Ryzen Z1 Extreme processor. It also boasts 32GB of RAM and a spacious 1TB SSD. While this premium configuration comes at a price—$829.99, available exclusively at Best Buy—it stands out as a top-tier handheld gaming PC. Its performance is so impressive that it has earned our recommendation as the best handheld gaming device currently available.

Unless you specifically require Windows 11 or the Steam Deck's trackpads for your favorite games, this is the handheld gaming PC to buy today. As noted in our 9/10 review of the Legion Go S (Z1 Extreme, SteamOS):

“By transitioning from Windows to SteamOS and upgrading to the Z1 Extreme processor, the Lenovo Legion Go S has emerged as one of the top handhelds on the market, underscoring the significant progress Microsoft still needs to make for its own handheld offering.”

With multiple Legion Go S variants available, it's important to choose the right model. Earlier this year, Lenovo launched a version running Windows 11 with the less powerful Z2 Go chip, followed by a SteamOS edition also equipped with the Z2 Go. This latest model, featuring SteamOS and the Z1 Extreme chip, surpasses the Steam Deck in specifications—enabling it to run newer titles such as Doom: The Dark Ages, which are beyond the Steam Deck's capabilities.

If you prefer to wait before making a purchase, that's understandable. We are currently in a golden age for handheld gaming PCs. Microsoft and ASUS are set to launch the Xbox ROG Ally and the Z2 Extreme-powered Xbox ROG Ally X later this year, both featuring a refined version of Windows 11 optimized for handheld gaming.

Additional devices powered by the Z2 Extreme chip will also arrive in the future. However, if you're looking for a highly efficient SteamOS device available today, the Legion Go S with the Z1 Extreme chip is the ideal choice. It's a great time to be a handheld PC gamer.
