IGN has unveiled that fans of the eagerly awaited game, Hollow Knight: Silksong, will have the opportunity to play it at Australia's national museum of screen culture, ACMI, starting September 18, 2025. Developed by Team Cherry, a studio based in Adelaide, South Australia, Silksong has consistently topped the Steam wishlist chart and remains one of the most anticipated indie games worldwide. While the exact release date remains undisclosed beyond a broad 2025 window, this announcement offers a tangible glimpse into the game's progress.
Silksong will be a highlight of the Game Worlds exhibition at the Melbourne museum. This event will not only allow visitors to play the game but will also showcase its intricate design and artistic direction through various displays. These displays will include detailed insights into the hundreds of sprites that animate the protagonist, Hornet, as well as the complex logic behind the game's challenging boss fights.

Bethan Johnson and Jini Maxwell, co-curators at ACMI, expressed their excitement about featuring Silksong, stating, "Since Hollow Knight: Silksong's initial announcement in 2019, it has been one of the most anticipated indie games on the planet – and we are thrilled to celebrate the design of this South Australian-made game as a centrepiece of Game Worlds in September. From the hundreds of sprites that animate Hornet’s different movements and attacks, to the logic behind the game’s most challenging boss fights – and of course, having the game playable in-gallery – our Silksong displays delve deeply into the details of the game's artistic direction and design. We’re so grateful to Team Cherry for trusting us with their work, and so excited to share that work with you!"
As part of the announcement, ACMI shared a sprite sheet from Silksong, which is one of several design elements from the game that will be on display at the Game Worlds exhibition. The image was provided to IGN with permission.
The news has sparked speculation among Hollow Knight fans about the game's release date. Given that Silksong will be playable at the museum from September 18, it's plausible that the game might launch before this date, possibly in August. Recent developments, including a brief appearance at Nintendo’s Switch 2 Direct and Team Cherry's reaffirmation of the 2025 release window, suggest that the game's launch is drawing closer.
Initially announced for Nintendo Switch and PC, with subsequent confirmations for Xbox (and Game Pass), PlayStation 4, and PlayStation 5, Silksong has been the subject of various intriguing teases over the years. The year 2025 began with a mysterious tease related to a chocolate cake recipe, fueling hopes among fans for a significant update or re-reveal in April.
