Firaxis will change Civilization 7 after a barrage of criticism

Following a disappointing launch, the creators of Civilization VII are committed to significant improvements. Firaxis Games has acknowledged player feedback regarding the user interface and gameplay, and is actively developing solutions.

Currently holding a 47% positive rating on Steam, the game's criticism centers not on core mechanics, but on a simplified interface, missing features, and a perceived lack of content. In response, Firaxis has prioritized interface enhancements, focusing on improved map readability, refined menus, and a more intuitive user experience.

Upcoming additions include:

  • Multiplayer team functionality;
  • New map types;
  • Customization options (renaming religions and cities).

A balance patch and further improvements, Update 1.1.0, are slated for release in March. The full release of Civilization VII is scheduled for February 11th.

Many reviewers believe the game launched prematurely and requires substantial further development. The $70 price point has been particularly criticized as not reflecting the game's current state. Civilization fans are hopeful that developer responsiveness to player feedback, and the promised updates, will restore the game to the high standard expected of the series.

The hope among fans is that Civilization VII will ultimately live up to the franchise's legacy of excellence and meticulous detail, but significant improvements are needed to achieve this.
