Speculation about a Final Fantasy IX (FFIX) remake is heating up again after Square Enix updated the game’s 25th anniversary site. New profiles for beloved characters like Zidane, Vivi, Garnet, and Steiner have been added, leading many fans to believe an announcement is imminent.

Earlier this year, the launch of the anniversary website itself sparked rumors. These grew stronger when Square Enix shared a tweet featuring a memorable quote from the fan-favorite black mage, Vivi.

The latest update features small icons for four of the eight main party members. Clicking on them reveals brief descriptions and new artwork by FFIX's original character designer, Toshiyuki Itahana, summarizing each character’s role and motivations.

While nothing is confirmed, the level of detail Square Enix is investing in this celebration has fans anticipating a major announcement. For now, everyone is waiting for further news about a potential remake.

New Anniversary Merchandise

Square Enix has also expanded the game’s 25th anniversary merchandise lineup. New items include a replica of Garnet’s necklace, a wearable version of Vivi’s hat, a collection of acrylic standees, and more.

Garnet’s silver necklace is now available for pre-order, with an expected release date of November 15, priced at approximately ¥38,500 (around $260). A wearable replica of Vivi’s iconic hat is also open for reservations, targeting a September 6 release at about ¥17,600 (roughly $120).

Another highlight is the Final Fantasy IX Acrylic Stand Collection, which includes eight different designs. These are sold as blind boxes, so buyers won’t know which character they get until opening the package.

With all this new merchandise and ongoing preparations, many feel a remake is inevitable. Although Square Enix remains quiet, fans continue to hope for a revival of their beloved adventure in Gaia.
