Second Dinner ditches Nuverse as Marvel Snap publisher, partners with Skystone Games

Second Dinner Parts Ways with Nuverse, Partners with Skystone Games

Following the removal of Marvel Snap from app stores in the wake of the Bytedance/TikTok situation, developer Second Dinner has severed ties with its publisher, Nuverse. The studio announced a new partnership with US-based publisher Skystone Games via its official Twitter account.

This move is the latest in a series of events impacting games published by Nuverse and other Bytedance subsidiaries, including Mobile Legends: Bang Bang, after they were caught in the crossfire of the recent TikTok ban. Bytedance's actions, seemingly intended to protect TikTok, left several titles unavailable, prompting a swift reversal following intervention. While TikTok's restoration was relatively smooth, other games, including Marvel Snap, faced prolonged outages. Second Dinner reported they received no prior notification of the removal.

The Fallout

Second Dinner's decision to leave Nuverse is unsurprising given the unexpected and disruptive nature of the app store removals. The speed of this change suggests significant internal repercussions for Nuverse stemming from developer dissatisfaction.

While geopolitical factors are relevant, the more pressing question is whether Bytedance's aggressive tactics to save TikTok have inadvertently undermined its gaming ambitions. Second Dinner's actions certainly suggest this is a possibility.
