Fans are voicing their frustration with Black Ops 6's latest crossover event featuring the Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, particularly due to the high cost of the skins. Read on to understand why some fans are unhappy with Activision's monetization strategy!
Black Ops 6 Facing Backlash From Fans
BO6 Expensive Crossover TMNT Skins
The excitement surrounding Black Ops 6's crossover with Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles during its Season 2 Reloaded event has been overshadowed by the steep prices of the skins. Each of the iconic turtles—Leonardo, Raphael, Michelangelo, and Donatello—costs $20 to unlock, while Master Splinter's skin is available through the $10 Battlepass Premium Track. Collectively, this adds up to a whopping $100, not including the $10 TMNT-themed weapon blueprint.
The dissatisfaction stems from the fact that Black Ops 6 is a paid game, priced at $69.99, yet still requires additional payments for cosmetic items. Fans have drawn comparisons with other games like Fortnite, where similar content is more affordably priced. "That is INSANE," said Reddit user neverclaimsurv. "In Fortnite, I think I paid $25.00 for all 4 turtles, and that's a free game."
Moreover, there's uncertainty about the longevity of these purchases. It's unlikely that these skins will transfer to future installments, meaning players who invest in these cosmetic packs may not enjoy them beyond the current game cycle. Reddit user SellMeYourSirin pointed out, "It has everything to do with the fact a full-price game (that’s likely gonna be replaced within the next year) has THREE tiers of battle passes." The game offers a free tier, with the other two requiring payment.
Given that Black Ops 6 is the highest-grossing video game in the United States in 2024, Activision may continue with more paid crossover events. However, sustained fan pressure could potentially shift this trend.
Black Ops 6’s Mixed Steam Review
Black Ops 6 currently holds a mixed rating on Steam, with only 47% of its 10,696 reviews recommending the game. Beyond the pricey skins, players report issues like PC crashes, rampant hackers, and Activision’s use of AI.
Steam user LemonRain shared their frustration, stating, "This game has had problems with hard crashing since launch, but the latest update has made it so I can’t complete a single match. Reinstalling. Safe mode. Support. Nothing works and I have given up."
Some players who haven't experienced crashes still encounter hackers capable of instantly killing all enemies without even starting the match. One player waited 15 minutes in a lobby only to be matched with hackers.
In protest against Activision’s increasing reliance on AI, some users have posted negative reviews generated by AI chatbots like ChatGPT. Steam user Rundur wrote, "Since Activision can't be bothered hiring real people anymore, I've decided to take advantage of AI myself and ask ChatGPT to write this negative review for me. Enjoy."
Despite these issues, Black Ops 6 continues to generate substantial revenue, largely due to its costly battle passes compared to other shooter games.
