Steam Player Count Goes Up After Patch 8 Release

Baldur’s Gate 3 (BG3) has rolled out its much-anticipated final patch, marking the end of its remarkable journey. Released on April 15, 2025, by Larian Studios, Patch 8 is the last major update for the game. With the release of this final update, BG3 experienced a notable increase in player numbers, catapulting it just outside of Steam’s top 10 most played games. Previously hovering around 60,000 concurrent players, the game now boasts over 169,000 players as of this writing.

Larian Studios' CEO, Swen Vincke, took to X (formerly Twitter) on April 22 to comment on the sudden influx of players post-Patch 8. He highlighted the game's robust mod support, which allows the studio to shift focus to their "next big thing." It has been reported that Larian Studios will depart from the Dungeons and Dragons (D&D) universe to embark on a new venture.

As a result, Wizards of the Coast and Hasbro, the owners of D&D, will continue the Baldur’s Gate franchise without Larian Studios. They are currently negotiating with other studios to potentially develop a Baldur’s Gate 4.

12 New Subclasses, Photo Mode, and More!

Announced back in November 2024 via a Steam blog post, Patch 8 has been a long time coming. This update introduces 12 new subclasses, a photo mode, cross-play functionality, and a host of other features. The developers provided a detailed breakdown of the patch's contents on BG3's official website. Compared to the November 2024 announcement, this final set of patch notes boasts an extensive list of bug fixes and combat balance adjustments, ensuring that BG3 concludes on a high note.

Larian Studios has gone all out to enhance BG3, as evidenced by the numerous fixes and updates incorporated into this final version. While this is their last major patch, Larian remains committed to supporting the game’s modding community.
