Japanese Mahjong is a highly strategic and popular variant of the classic Mahjong game, played under a unique set of rules that emphasize scoring, hand composition, and tactical decision-making. In this version, players aim to form a complete hand consisting of four melds and one pair. A valid hand could look like this: \[1, 2, 3\]\[6, 6, 6\]\[6, 7, 8\]\[N, N, N\]\[4, 4\], where each group represents either a sequence (Chi), a triplet (Pon), or a quad (Kan).

The gameplay interface includes a slider located beneath the screen, which you can move to select specific tiles. Tapping the slider allows you to discard the selected tile, streamlining the process for smooth and intuitive play.

It's important to note that not all hands are valid after performing actions such as Chi, Pon, or Open Kan. For example, certain combinations involving the terminal tiles (1 and 9) may affect your ability to form approved hands. Additionally, in Japanese Mahjong, at least one yaku (valid hand condition) is required to win a round, adding an extra layer of complexity to the game.

One key mechanic in Japanese Mahjong is the Reach bet. By paying 1,000 points, a player declares Reach, signaling that they are one tile away from completing a winning hand. However, once you perform Chi, Pon, or Open Kan, you forfeit the ability to declare Reach. A closed hand (one formed without any open melds) often results in higher scores and more advantageous situations.

Understanding Lost Hands

A "Lost Hand" occurs when a player is waiting on a specific tile to complete their hand, but has already discarded that winning tile earlier in the game. As a result, they cannot win off an opponent’s discard. Even if the needed tile is among those already discarded, the hand remains incomplete unless drawn directly from the wall (self-draw). This makes strategic tile management crucial throughout the match.

Importantly, if another player discards a tile that completes your hand, you must immediately reason whether that hand is valid before declaring Ron (winning off discard). If the hand qualifies as a Lost Hand, then Ron cannot be declared. However, self-draw remains a viable option even in such cases.

The key rule to remember is that Ron cannot be executed using a tile you have already discarded. Always evaluate your hand carefully based on the opponent's discarded tiles before making a winning declaration.
