Hnefatafl, an age-old Scandinavian board game, predates chess and was popular throughout medieval Europe. This game, also known as Tafl, features two armies of different sizes engaging in strategic combat. The black army, representing invaders, aims to capture the white king, while the white army, the defenders, strives to protect their king and facilitate his escape.

Often dubbed the Game of the Vikings, Hnefatafl weaves tales of historical events such as the Moskowites' invasion of Sweden and the Viking raids on Britain. Central to every story is the thrilling pursuit of the king.

Despite its simple rules, Hnefatafl offers deep strategic gameplay. Players can employ tactics like surrounding enemy pieces, setting traps, and compelling their opponents to surrender. Will you seize the king for gold and glory, or can the king's loyal guards fend off the invaders long enough to secure his escape?

With over 200,000 possible variants, you can tailor your own custom versions for both offline and online play.

The game supports cross-platform play across iOS, Windows, and Linux, allowing you to use a single account to access all your matches on any device. The asynchronous multiplayer feature lets you play at your own pace.

• Added the option to always display the remaining time in an online match with a set timeout, previously only available for quick matches.
